Most English women workers believe sky is the limit

LONDON - Seventy-two percent of English and Welsh women dismissed any notion that a "glass ceiling" held them back in their careers in favor of men, according to a study published on Monday.

Only 11 percent said that they were blocked by the so-called invisible barrier to job promotion, according to a survey of 1,390 current and former students of 24 Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) schools in England and Wales.

Meanwhile, only 4 percent of girls finishing their last year of school expected to encounter discrimination that could see men promoted ahead of them, according to the survey.

The survey also found that 78 percent of graduates consider themselves to be successful, 23 percent think that they are very successful, 68 percent have met or surpassed their school day ambitions, while 24 percent have reassessed them.

According to the survey, personal fulfillment was the most common form of measuring success, followed by family life, meaningfulness at work, financial success, and status.

The survey found that 95 percent were confident that they would achieve their ambitions, while 24 percent were very confident.

Many respondents said that they were more confident and assertive as a result of attending an all-girls school.

The Girls' Day School Trust is the largest group of independent schools in the United Kingdom, with 3,500 staff and 19,500 students between the ages of three and 18.

Former pupils include businesswoman Nicola Horlick, TV historian Bettany Hughes, and former secretary of state Baroness (Virginia) Bottomley.

The GDST's Sue Bridgett said that the survey shows how strong women are today.

"This survey demonstrates that young women who have met a wide range of challenges - academic, sporting, extra-curricular, leadership - during their school days, carry the confidence to succeed throughout their lives and careers," Bridgett said.

"They have the self-belief to decide for themselves what they want out of life, and the courage to achieve it."
