Improper
diet, lack of exercise increase breast cancer risk
MUNICH
- The wrong diet and a lack of exercise can increase a
woman’s risk of breast cancer, according to Germany’s
professional association for gynaecologists.
Most
tumours that grow in women’s breasts are
estrogen-dependent, and after menopause the hormone is
produced primarily in fatty tissue. Therefore, eating less
animal fat and doing without the empty carbohydrates in
refined sugar, white bread and alcohol can not only reduce a
women’s waistline, but also lower her risk of breast
cancer, the Munich-based association says.
Women
can lower their risk of contracting the disease by
exercising regularly, giving birth to their first child
before age 35 and by nursing their babies.
Women
who never bore children, gave birth to their first child
late in their fertile years, started menstruating early and
who entered menopause late have an increased risk of breast
cancer. Smokers also increase their risk because nicotine
fosters the formation of cancer cells.
