Dr. Mohan Rangaswamy, Specialist Plastic Surgeon, Welcare Hospital responds:

Dear Doctor,
I'm 30 year old married woman who is interested in liposuction on my thighs, I'm not fat actually, but I need to lose some inches from my thighs around. But for the past three months, I'm having R0ACCUTAN for my acne. Can I do liposuction during this treatment? I have heard there will be non-stop bleeding during liposuction. Please guide me and tell me who is perfect in Dubai, than you. Sheyda, Dubai

If you are not fat but have a problem only in the thighs, then you may be a good candidate for liposuction; in fact liposuction is a surgery to change shape and NOT for weight loss.

Roaccutane is not a problem for liposuction, it is only problematic for face resurfacing such as chemical peel or laser of the face. We have done lipo on patients on Roaccutane.

It is advisable to stop it for about 10 days and restart one week after the surgery. You are welcome to see me in consultation. Please call the Welcare hospital number 2827788 to make an appointment.

Dear Doctor,
I have a mole on my fore head, its about 4mm diameter. Can you please suggest me what is the best way of removing it. Sudarshan, Bangalore

Please see your local plastic surgeon. Surgery is the best way for such moles.

Dear Doctor,
Seven months ago, I had a rhinoplasty. After the operation I noticed I am having difficulties in breathing. What should be done now? Do I have to undertake another nose job? Mona, Beirut

You need to see an ENT doctor to see what is causing the obstruction. It may be the septal deviation or narrowing in the inner part of the nostril due to cross adhesions [which may occur as a complication from the cuts made for rhinoplasty].

It may not even be obstructive but more like allergy etc. causing swelling inside the nose. Once the cause is clear, then the cure will depend on the cause. If you can come to Dubai I may be able to see and guide you.

Dear Doctor,
I got pregnant two years in a row, and in each pregnancy I gained more than 30 kgs due to bed rest. I have tried everything to lose the weight and exercise daily but didn't succeed. I have lost a lot of confidence in myself and need that push. I was wondering if I can do liposuction to give me that boost.

I'm in my 30's 164cm, 88kgs. Basically all the weight is from the tummy and down. I read in one session you take 6litres what is that equivalent to? and the cost about 16,000 is that working only on one part of the body or overall? Plus is it possible to finance the charges or it has to be paid up front? Thank you Anonymous, Dubai

Most of your information is correct. We generally remove about 5 liters max and that is equal to about 5 Kg of fat. While that may not sound much, in terms of body contouring this can give very significant localized improvement. The procedure can be repeated as well.

Liposuction is not a weight loss tool anyway. If the fat is more in certain parts of you body, as you say, then you may be a candidate for the procedure. Only after the consultation and examination will I be able to give you an idea about the expected improvement. Liposuction can give you the initial push toward a better body; however there is no short cut to healthy eating and a healthy active lifestyle.

We do not offer financing, you may use a credit card. Payment is partly upfront and the rest after the procedure when the bill is finalized. Depending upon the case the amount may even be less than what you have mentioned. Work on only one part of the body would be cheaper. you may call the Welcare hsopital to make an appointment @ 2827788.

Dear Doctor,
I would be greatly obliged if you could tell me whether the scars left from HSV 1 (fever blisters/cold sores) below my lower lip and chin can be removed by any procedure. I am a 25 year old Indian male and have attacks of this virus every month for the past 1 year and when they go away, leave behind ugly scars. In fact, just below my lower lip, there are a lot of rough patches along the fold/crease, which look very nasty. Any suggestions? Thanks Roonil, Dubai

It is difficult to say without seeing you. We should also discuss how to avoid future scars by timely use of antiviral drugs/antibiotics.

There are a few procedures that I can do to remove/minimize these scars but I need to see you first. I suggest you make an appointment.

Dear Doctor,
I would like to have collagen injected into my forehead where I have deep gesture lines. Where can I find an appropriate expert? Arzu Dal, Abu Dhabi

If you like you may visit me in Dubai, I do this procedure regularly. However collagen is used rarely now-a-days, there are better fillers available.

Sometimes for forehead lines Botox and fillers both may have to be used for best results. You may contact 04-2827788 to set up an appointment.

Dear Doctor,
I am 16 years old suffering from serious depression, I am not overweight but would like liposuction on my upper arms and around my stomach. Am I too young? Isabell, Dubai

Age factor is relative, it depends on the nature of the problem. Of course you will need parental consent for any procedure. You do not indicate what depresses you so it is better that you come for a consultation and then we will take it up from there.

Dear Doctor,
Which is the best place in Bangalore for tummy tuck? Greeta, Banglaore

Sorry I am not from Bangalore but you might want to try Manipal hospital, they have a good plastic surgery department.

Dear Doctor,
I wish to know if there is any way by way of surgery or other to increase my height in Dubai. Shiraz, Iran

I am sorry there is no such surgery available here.

Dear Doctor,
I am trying to find affordable corrective surgery for inverted nipples and perhaps a breast up lift. I am 34E and at 27yrs old have had sagging breasts for almost 10yrs! I am worried about scaring and saw on one of the other queries that the nipple is left intact for uplift. so no scaring? I am based in London, but am considering having surgery elsewhere, as it so expensive in the UK. Do you have any idea of price for these procedures? Thanks Renee, London

Given your age and the size of the breast mentioned by you, you certainly seem like a candidate for breast reduction, uplift and correction of inverted nipples if that is also a problem. I must tell you that there are many ways of doing this and surgeons generally do what they have been doing for long. Unfortunately the traditional and still the commonest technique leaves behind very long scars which most older women accept as a trade-off for the relief that they get from heavy breasts. This is obviously not an acceptable option for younger women.

Fortunately there are minimal scar methods one of which results in a scar only around the areola [the dark circle around the nipple]. the other technique leaves you with a scar around areola plus a thin straight-line scar in the lower hemisphere of the breast. Both are fairly acceptable and can be further improved by a scar revision done at 6 months. The inverted nipple will require a correction later [maybe at the time of the scar revision]. Overall, you are looking at one major surgery or one major and another minor 6 months down the line.

Cost for reduction and lift is around USD 4,500 inclusive of hospital stay, surgery and anesthesia.

Dear Doctor,
I have acne scars, not very prominent but well visible at the same time. Can you suggest the best treatment for this problem and the costs involved by this procedure EF, Dubai

For acne scars some form of resurfacing like dermabrasion or chemical peel are needed to smoothen the skin. One may also need to use fat injections [your own fat] to elevate depressed areas of the cheek. Very good improvement is possible in most cases.

Dear Doctor,
I am a 27-year old woman and got a mole recently on my chin. I just want to know how and why does a mole appear? Thank you. Rafath Masood, Dubai

Moles are known to appear all through the life and especially in the teens and twenties. They are due to the proliferation of the pigment cells of the skin and are mostly harmless.

If a mole is growing rapidly, causes itching, bleeds or forms an ulcer, you must see a dermatologist immediately as it may be a rare malignant or dangerous form called melanoma.
