Should female genital mutilation continue and why?

No way! No tradition no matter how old it is, should be revered more than the teachings of Islam. Islam preaches women's right- what right does FGM give to a woman? None!

Samia Ghaffar, Karachi

No, of course not. That is absolutely illegal in Islam as in any other law. Women mutilation is not a part of the Islam but derives from the traditions in Africa. In their (hedon) culture it is permitted.

Since Islam took over their religion that tradition stayed in their culture. Even though in some Islamic countries they copied it, it has no Islamic base and therefore it should be banned. The ones who continue doing it should get a severe punishment.

Camelia, Rotterdam

No. FGM should not continue we are not living in medieval times and if these so called Muslims are doing this because of religion then they are going against Allah, who has created a woman’s body.

These uneducated people don't understand that in Islam you are not supposed to remove internal organs unless of sickness or accident. Please educate them on this subject and birth control.

Ramona Khan, Canada

Yes. Islam says female genital mutilation should be done with girls at the age of 6 yrs.

Fauzia, Karachi

Of Course not!!!  It is completely un-Islamic. Circumcision is done only to males and that has many medical benefits. But not to females.

The article does not consist of any Islamic ruling and misleads the reader. I suggest that proper research be done and publish the Islamic ruling along with articles of this kind.

Fatma, UAE

Obviously not. It's one of those issues where tradition does not help. We as a world society that is striving to progress and grow intellectually should question customs which are clouded by ignorance. This is a procedure which brings harmful, painful effects.

To remain silent and follow this unspoken rule as a result of fear is to neglect oneself to the point of extinguishing reason. Our body was given by God to be treated with utmost respect, when a women is mutilated to satisfy a man or a custom she is disrespecting our creator and herself.

Those who victimized a woman and brought her such suffering will most definitely someday face the consequence of their actions.

Jade, Fort Lauderdale

Absolutely not, it is the most inhuman acts ever to be perpetuated. You are mutilating the body and physically and mentally damaging women for life. This practice should be stopped immediately.

Jessica, Dubai

People carrying out female mutilation should be mutilated themselves and see how they like it. Move into the modern (thinking )world.

Doug Jacques, age 86, Nambuccxa Heads

No, female genital mutilation should NOT continue. All blind beliefs are baseless. The women's future behaviour depends on the way they are brought up at home and not because of FGM.

Educate the illiterate or the new generation of women and men. Old illiterate fools can go to hell. This practice is inhumane.
